Takes me right back to my first proper go at the gym, that one in Covent Garden, must've been a rainy Tuesday evening in… 2018? I remember staring at that sea of steel, thinking, "Right, where does one even start?" The noise, the smell of rubber and sweat, that low hum of treadmills – proper intimidating, it was.

So, what shapes it all for a beginner? It's not about copying some ripped bloke's routine from Instagram, that's for sure. Disaster waiting to happen, that is. I learned the hard way trying to mimic a deadlift I saw online – spent a week walking like I'd been on a horse for a fortnight! No, for a woman just starting out, it's a different beast entirely.

First off, the goal ain't about getting "shredded" overnight. Who are we kidding? It's more about… not feeling like a bag of spanners when you get out of bed. It's wanting to carry the weekly shop from Waitrose in one trip without your arms giving up. It's that feeling you get after a good walk – that bit of energy, that clear head – but turned up a notch. For my mate Sarah, her goal was just to climb the stairs to her flat without getting puffed out. Simple as. And that's a cracking place to start.

Then you've got the modifications. Oh, you have to tinker! Machines are your best friend at the start. That leg press machine? Godsend. Lets you work your legs without worrying about balancing a barbell on your back. And the weights – start with the little pastel-coloured dumbbells, the ones that look like they belong in a nursery. There's no shame in it! I started with the 4kg ones, and my arms were singing the next day. The trick is to focus on the *movement*, not the weight. Can you do it slowly, with control? Does it feel solid? That's the stuff.

Form is everything. I once saw a woman doing lat pulldowns, yanking that bar down like she was starting a lawnmower on a cold morning – all back, no shoulders. I wanted to help, but you don't want to be that person, do you? A good gym will have mirrors. Use 'em! Or better yet, book a session or two with a trainer. Tell 'em you're a beginner. A decent one will show you how to hinge at the hips for a squat, how to keep your spine like a straight rod. It's boring, but it stops you getting hurt. Trust me, a tweaked back from bad form puts you off for weeks.

And the vibe! You want to find your corner. Maybe it's the quieter area with the mats and stability balls. For a beginner gym workout, a female might feel more comfortable there, just getting the feel of a plank or a glute bridge without an audience. Or maybe it's a class – BodyPump or something similar where the instructor shouts the counts and you just follow along. Takes the thinking right out of it.

It's also about the little victories. The first time you do a full push-up from your toes. The first time you add a bigger plate to the cable machine and it actually moves. Or just the fact that you recognise the regulars and they give you a nod. You start to belong. That's the real goal, isn't it? Not just changing your body, but finding a bit of confidence in a place that used to scare the life out of you.

You'll have days where you can't be bothered. I still do. But then you remember how good that post-workout smoothie tastes, or how much calmer you feel after thrashing it out on the rower for 20 minutes. It starts to stick. Before you know it, you're the one who knows how to adjust the bench, and some other beginner gives you that lost look. And you think, "Blimey, I was right there." And you give them a smile. Pass it on, like.

Blimey, talking about beginner gym workouts for women, innit?
