Takes me right back to last winter, freezing my toes off in that drafty warehouse-turned-gym in Peckham. You know the one, near the railway arches? Smelt faintly of old rubber and determination. Right, so you're asking about the *setups*—the actual bits of kit that make a space feel like you can properly attack your whole body without just running from one lonely treadmill to a dusty bench.

It's not about having *everything*, mind you. I've been to those glossy places in Mayfair with rows of identical, blinking machines. Felt more like a showroom. Dead quiet, too, except for the whirring. No soul. What defines it is a kind of… *flow*. A clever little circuit you can get into without waiting twenty minutes for some bloke to finish his set while scrolling on his phone.

First thing that comes to mind? A proper **power rack or squat rack**. It's the absolute cornerstone, the anchor of the room. Not one of those rickety half-cages, but a solid one with safety bars you can trust with your life when you're going for that last, grindy rep. I remember this one at Muscle Works in Brixton—the uprights were chipped and the J-hooks were worn silver. Beautiful. You just *knew* generations of lifters had grunted there. That station lets you do your squats, your overhead presses, your rack pulls. It's a multi-tool.

Then, you've got to have a **functional trainer or cable crossover machine**. The good ones, with two independent stacks. Oh, the variety! Face pulls, tricep pushdowns, cable rows, woodchoppers. I was in one gym in Manchester where the cables were so smooth—just a soft *hiss*—it felt like silk. You can work angles free weights just can't hit. It's the yin to the power rack's yang.

Can't forget a **dedicated deadlift platform**. Not just a bit of rubber matting, but a proper raised platform, often with bumper plates scattered about. There's a specific *thud* a properly loaded bar makes when it's dropped on that platform. It's a statement. That area says, "Here is where you pick up heavy things." It's for deadlifts, cleans, shrugs. It’s often the loudest, most energetic spot in the gym.

You'll also want a **station for pull-ups and dips**. A sturdy, multi-grip pull-up bar and parallel bars. The best gyms have these integrated into the rack or as a standalone rig. There's nothing more humbling—or rewarding—than battling your own bodyweight. I still struggle to get three clean reps out after a long day, makes me feel like a beginner again, in the best way.

And then, the **adjustable benches**. At least two, preferably more. One flat, one inclined. They need to be solid, not wobbly. They get dragged over to the racks, the dumbbell area, used for step-ups, you name it. They're the nomads of the gym floor.

Speaking of, a **full set of dumbbells**, going up to at least 50kg, arranged neatly on a rack. None of this "we only have one of the 22.5kg" nonsense. And space around them to actually move! The worst is when you're trying to do lunges and you're nearly in the next bloke's lap.

Honestly, a truly great full body workout gym feels like a workshop. It's got the core stations that let you move in all the ways you're supposed to—push, pull, hinge, squat, carry. It's not pristine. It's got character, chalk dust in the air, plates that aren't all matching colours. It's defined by versatility and a lack of fuss. You can walk in with a plan, or just start at one station and let your workout unfold based on what's free. That's the magic of it. The rest—the leg press, the fancy smith machine—that's just garnish. Nice to have, but not what defines the place.

Blimey, that's a proper question, innit?
