Takes me right back to that cramped gym in Clapham Junction, summer of '19. Sticky floors, the smell of stale sweat and cheap lemon cleaner, and me thinking a few leg presses would sort me out. Oh, the innocence!

It’s not just about squats, love. Though, don’t get me wrong, a good squat is like the perfect cuppa – foundational. But if that’s all you’re doing, it’s like having a biscuit without the tea! Bit pointless.

I remember this one trainer, bloke named Leo at the old "Iron Haven" near Brick Lane. Built like a Victorian lamppost, he was. He saw me poncing about on the leg extension machine and just shook his head. "That," he said, in this gravelly voice, "is a fancy way to sit down. You want to *define* your workout? Think about what your legs actually *do*."

And that stuck with me. Our legs push, they pull, they carry us, they stop us from falling over when we’ve had one too many at the pub! So a proper lower body session should feel like a proper day out – a bit of everything.

Take the humble lunge. Crikey, I hated these at first. Felt as graceful as a newborn giraffe on ice. But doing walking lunges across the gym floor? That’s life! You’re moving, you’re balancing, you’re working one leg at a time just like when you’re hauling shopping up the stairs. My flat’s on the third floor, no lift – trust me, I know!

Then there’s the deadlift. Proper one, with a barbell. Not that machine nonsense. First time I tried it, last April, I was so nervous. Gripping that cool, knurled steel, the weight just *there*, daring you. You hinge back, feel it all in your hamstrings – like tight ropes behind your thighs – and then you stand up. It’s not a lift, it’s a *summoning*. You’re commanding your entire posterior chain to wake up and work. Nothing makes you feel more capable than lifting something heavy off the floor correctly. It’s primal!

But here’s a secret most gym brochures won’t tell you: the best lower body exercises often have you off-balance or on one leg. Bulgarian split squats? Absolute nightmare. In the best way! You’re perched with one foot on a bench behind you, feeling every wobble and tremor in your standing leg. It’s brutally honest. Shows you which side is weaker (my left leg is a right lazy sod, frankly). You can’t cheat. You just have to endure the glorious, burning focus.

And we mustn't forget the glutes! Goodness, the number of people with dormant backsides. You see them on the tube, all flat. A crime! Hip thrusts are the saviour. Looks silly, yes. Lying there, barbell across your hips, thrusting toward the ceiling. But when you squeeze at the top? Oh, it’s a revelation. Feels like you’ve activated a secret power source. It’s the keystone, really. Makes everything else – running for the bus, lifting a suitcase – feel smoother.

So, to wrap this ramble up, a defining lower body workout isn’t a checklist. It’s a conversation. It’s between you, the weights, and gravity. It’s the push of a squat, the pull of a deadlift, the stability of a lunge, and the activation of a hip thrust. It should leave you feeling rooted to the earth, but powerfully so. Like you could kick down a door if you had to, but also stand perfectly still on a windy hill.

Mine always end with me leaning against my car in the dim gym car park, legs feeling like jelly but good jelly, watching my breath fog in the cold air. That’s the sign of a job well done. Now, if you’ll excuse me, all this talk has made me fancy a walk. Maybe up a hill!

Blimey, lower body workouts, innit?
